This shouldn't be one blog post but three - as usual I didn't find the time to post this before, so here's a three in one:

In the 19th of December, the latest +ko+ko+ album, "A Path To Nowhere", was released. This is a great album, and Merankorii did its mastering. Click on the CD picture to see more info/buy it, and check the videos from three of its tracks:

The next day, 20th of December, Merankorii did its first concert after the release of Alain. While there are no official recordings of the show, some of the attendants recorded some sound, video or pictures of the event. Merankorii Live at Chiado by Nuno Nunes

Finally, some news from the new year: yesterday was the release of 20ths of 2011, a free compilation with tracks from the 11 20th's of 2011.

These tracks don't share a sound or style or theme, but they all came into existence in a similar way. Each track was completely written and recorded on the 20th day of some month in 2011, as part of the 20th project.

This compilation contains contributions from Mystified (USA), The Knits (Australia), +ko+ko+ (Portugal), Andy McClelland (Canada), RainBoat (Australia), The Desks (Australia), Bray's Warehouse (Australia), 44Hertz (Australia), Telafonica (Australia), Merankorii (Portugal), The Friday Project (USA), WRC (USA), kokori (Portugal) and Cup and Bow (Australia).

Embeded, you'll find Merankorii's track "Dramatis Personae", and Kokori's track "Apert", each with a little description of the track (remember: kokori is a musical project made by Merankorii and +ko+ko+).Dramatis Personae by MerankoriiAccording to Wikipedia, "the term [dramatis personae] can be applied to any situation in which people or characters play a role, or appear to do so-—such as a metaphor, a drama, or a court case. It may also be facetiously applied in a situation where members of a group appear to play predictable roles, often for comic effect." What happens when the keys of a keyboard are the actors, as much as the whole (and each) keyboard itself, and their player? And in such a scenario, whose story would they be playing?

Apert by kokoriLike in most of Kokori's tracks, this one was made after the euro-making day job. It's title is a reference to Neal Stephenson's Anathem universe, and its context can be grabbed from here.

New album released: Alain

Merankorii is glad to announce the release of the latest album, "Alain". This album is a tribute to Jehan Ariste Alain, unfortunately better known for his efforts in the war than at the keyboard. As the label puts it, "Paying homage to Jehan Ariste Alain, Merankorii delivers a solid half hour of lavish, off-kilter classical church organ and pseudo-harpsichord pieces, equally quirky and haunting... and obviously unlike anything A Beard of Snails has released before." This is an edition of 20 white cassettes, and a smaller sub-set of them (9, actually) come with a CD version, for those of you lacking a cassette tape player. Orders can be done via e-mail, the tape costs 6€ and the "tape + CD" version costs 7€ (shipping included worldwide). New album: Rather Than Bored

After a lot of teasing and letting some information slip, it is now, finally, the moment to announce it: Merankorii has been hardly working for two years to produce what now is "Rather Than Bored", a conceptually closed album that marks a (big) change on what Merankorii is.

I'm really happy with the result, and with the fact that, for the first time, Merankorii will be released on vinyl. The album comes both as a Vinyl LP and a CD, so if you're not really a fan of vinyl (or don't have a record player) you can still enjoy this album.

Necktar 2017 volume 3

Necktar 2017 is an yearly compilation, an ongoing project until the year 2017, each release with a new set of themes. The set of themes of volume 3 is Macro / Perception / Micro : Evolution. As in volume 2, Merankorii participates in this volume 3 with a track (Barbershop), and this year my side-project kokori is also participating, with the track "Terror Attack". The digital edition of this release is free to stream and download, and is composed by 111 tracks of different yet consistent horse norme bands.

Now with sixteen editions, the biggest Portuguese independent fair returns to its most regular place, for two days of cultural fair trade, networking and music. Highlighs in this edition for the concerts going on during the event, activities for kids with Mini-Laica (opportunity for kids to trade things they don’t want anymore) and story telling; the traditional second-hand stall (books and records); the “Science Is My Mother” wall in the expositions space in Bedeteca and a typography workshop by Oficina do Cego.

3) There's a new musical project you want to know about: kokori is a musical project between Merankorii and +ko+ko+ . Check it out!

4) "Nouvel Ordre Mondial [A Tribute to Ministry]" is out now: a free compilation tribute to Ministry, including a cover of Psalm 69 by Merankorii. Get it here!

Merankorii @ Magna Casta

It isn't the first time Merankorii has a "commissioned work" of some sort, but it was the first time that Merankorii was *really* commissioned to do some work :-) Some months ago, the great folks from Magna Casta a great Portuguese website about wine, talked with me to commission a song made by Merankorii to be used by them on some future videos. We talked about it and agreed to talk more on the issue, but in the meantime a 20th came, and what better inspiration for it than doing a track called "Magna"? Long story short (as 20th's have to be - short), the track was made and accepted, and Magna Casta already used the track for the first time.

The video follows, don't be afraid to spread the word :-)

Merankorii / Proyecto De Prueba - Cazatura De Arbori

It is with great pleasure that I now announce today's release of a new Merankorii album, called "Cazatura De Arbori" - a split CD between Merankorii and Proyecto De Prueba.

"Cazatura De Arbori" marks the end of a cycle - like the fall of a tree - for Merankorii, and with it the begining of another one. It is also the first physical release of Proyecto De Prueba, after two well recieved digital releases. The album is available in three different editions (prices include shipping):

Lighthouse Edition (2 CD) - 15 Euro

Merankorii quits SellABand

Because it wasn't fair for you, Merankorii fans and believers, Merankorii just quited SellABand.

A quick explanation: SellABand changed its Terms of Services. Each believer will have to cancel their account or accept them. If you (Merankorii SAB believers) agree with them, well, fine, but I don't want to incentive Merankorii fans to agree with a TOS that I don't agree myself. This is a part of what I said them about this issue:

I don't count on coming back to SAB as an artist until this [Terms of Services item number] 4.5 changes to something I feel more fair for me, as a band, to purpose to my fans, and I count to get back to being a believer *only*if* I find a band that I like so much that I'm willing to bet with my money in, taking into account that I might never see that money again

New release: Cryptoloop

Bash and python got together in a loop, messed up with some devices and crypt functions. The result was compressed and spat into a floppy. The riddle is that the source code, while not available, is shown by the 9 minutes long music track itself. You just have to learn how to reverse engineer it… Or, at least, enjoy the resulting tune. The geekiest release ever from Merankorii is out now: grab this Cryptoloop! Packed inside handmade cardboard covers. Limited to 10 copies.

Released at the 1st of February 2010, in three editions:

Floppy Disk - 6 Euro
Floppy Disk + Colored CD (with extra track) - 10 Euro
Package (10 different items includding the floppy and the CD) - 40 Euro
(All prices include shipping)

About the floppy edition: This is a *real* floppy disk. You'll need a 3 1/2 floppy disk drive or you won't be able to listen to this single. Yup, this sets the record as Merankorii's geekiest release ever ;-)

About the CD edition:
Besides the floppy, a CDr, with four different colors available. Purchasers of more than one of this packages get different colors. The CD includes the Cryptoloop track and a bonus track.

About the Package edition:
Each Package is different, and comes with 10 different items (expect most of them to be CDs), two of them being the Cryptoloop Floppy Disk and the Cryptoloop CD. Don't be afraid: no package will come with more than one Cryptoloop CD, unless you ask during the order. The market value of the items in the package is guaranteed to be more than the price of the package.

"New Aeon Symbols V - The Pentagram" Reviews

Damned By Light did a review on New Aeon Symbols V - The Pentagram, a 2CD compilation Merankorii made part of. Here's what they said about Merankorii's track:

Merankorii's 11-minuter sounds like you accidentally dialed to hell and the connection is in bad condition. You know what those dial-up-sounds are like, right? It's like a broken synth. Notes similar to that are played in a steady pace but without any melody, while being backed by some thin gritty distortion is what you'll hear for seven minutes. After that, more distortion, echoing and noisiness kicks in to give the track more structure, but the overall distortion soon fades and the track comes to it's end just barely more noisy than it was in the beginning. It's a really interesting track despite it's few elements, and a daring one too. I don't know how soon the track will lose it's appeal due to it's mostly thin soundscape, but it's a good listen nonetheless.

Their conclusion and rating for the album:

A Viagem released!

So, finaly Merankorii's fifth album is released. "A Viagem" was released both in MP3 and in a 30-copies limited edition. The CD edition is sold out.

Merankorii is eco-friendly

Having a band means having to engage with several activities, most of them not ecological. Doing CD releases, even being limited, adds to the problem: digital files are surely way more eco-friendly than CD's. If you consider a CD - the final product - as being "as bad as it gets", think twice: besides all the plastic, paper and ink there, there's also the wrappers, the printing machines, the energy consumption, the whole process of making the packaging...

Well, to make a long story short, Merankorii is inspired and devoted to Mother Nature. But if in the process of being what it is, Merankorii damages the environment, I also feel the need to work on the other face of the coin. Since I'm not into that field, it was decided that the best way to do so was to be a member of an environment orgazination. So, from now on, Merankorii is proud to be a member of Quercus, a Portuguse Association for the preservation of Mother Nature.

Merankorii is now Creative Commons. What does this mean? Well, it basicly means that anyone is free, for any track from Merankorii, to download it, rip it, share it, play it or even remix it. If you're interested, check more details here.

If you like Merankorii and want to support it, please still consider buying Merankorii's albums: it's the money I make with each release that helps me work in the next one. Still, this license will simply set you free of all restraints in matters like giving the music to your family or friends, and this surely sets legal the copies of Merankorii that end up in places like Peer to Peer networks.

Just a quick update:
The CD version of Sanguine, Merankorii's forth release, that was released as a split with Bardic Wisdom, was limited to 50 copies, and there are now only 4 copies left. So, if you want to have a chance to have this release in CD, hurry up and order it! The price for this CD is still 4€.

Falésia - Enough Dark Ambient - Merankorii against DRM

So, the "Falésia" release party with "Enough Dark Ambient" set of gigs went quite well.

Remember that, if you didn't went to the party and didn't get the 3CD compilation, you can download it for free.

Also, Merankorii's music "Lacrimae" was chosen to be used in an Anti-DRM movie, that you can see here.

On the 2nd of June at Fábrica de Som (Avenida Rodrigues de Freitas 27, Porto, Portugal), there's this gig comming:

In the same day, Falésia, a 3 cd dark ambient compilation by Portuguese projects, is going to be released by Enough Records, a Portuguese netlabel, and will be, obviously, free for download in their website. But if you attend to this gig, you're going to get it from free in CD-R format! This release will feature one Merankorii track.

Sanguine

Nothing is way too complex, and I never found something as complex as the human mind. But one thing is to understand something complex, the other is de-compexing it in order to transmit it - and that's the rational meaning behind Merankorii's minimalism.

As I've told you before, "Sanguine", a split with Bardic Wisdom, is going to be released in both Cassete and CD-R.

This release is limited to 50 Cassete copies and 50 CD-R's, and is going to see the light of day at the 15th of May, in 12 days! Keep updated...

I liked the review, even if the result numbers out as a 5/10, since the explanation for that is that this work is of a "not a simple assimilation".

As you know, Merankorii's latest album, Melencolia III, was released under the label of Nekrogoat Heresy Productions, a label that only releases Portuguese bands. NHP is a sub-label of War Flagellation Productions, also a label for obsure and dark sounds, but that words with worldwide bands.

A new release will see the light of day - an effort from those two labels - and that combines the dark ambient sounds of Merankorii and those of Australia's Bardic Wisdom: a split that will have two releases: one in K7 and other in CD.

Merankorii's side is going to be called "Sanguine", and is where the whole concept that begun with "O Monólogo do Mudo" is going to end.

Some answers for questions I already heard:

Sanguine is going to be the last album of the tetralogy. Yet, it doesn't mean that it will mark the end of Merankorii - it's exactly the oposite. Sanguine will open new doors to be explored in the works that will come after it...
A split release is basicly a release where two albums coexist in the same media. In this case, you'll be able to get one release (one K7 or one CD) and, in it, you'll find two albums: Sanguine from Merankorii and one other from Bardic Wisdom.

I'll surely give you more news on this matter, as things roll out...

Paula Simões, a Portuguese blogger and Merankorii fan, after getting her copy of Melencolia III, decided to interview me an publish it on the web. Under the subtitle "The book that turn out to be music", the interview shows you a little more about Merankorii in general and Melencolia III in particular. From talking about the begginings of Merankorii and what led me to creating it, to previsions about the future path of Merankorii, this is an interview that I really consider interesting.
